SPARTA, NJ - Sparta High School boys tennis defeated Pope John, 3-2 on Friday winning back-to-back matches to close the week. They doubled their victory total entering the matches.

Tennis is a best of five series. With Sparta's two singles players, all they need is one more win from their three other matches. They got just that on Friday.

Nick Matkiwsky handled Pope John's number one player, beating him 6-3, 6-2. James Wang beat James Milano, 6-0, 6-0.

Jared DeLeu lost in three sets in the third singles matchup. After Ben Curras and Vaugh Thomas lost in straight sets, it was all up to the second doubles. After winning the previous day against Newton, confidence was high for the partners. Evan Silberstein and Connor Smetana won their match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to clinch the fourth win of the season for the Spartans.

Sparta is now 4-6 on the season. They next play on Tuesday against High Point.
