NEWTON, NJ - Nick Matkiwsky and James Wang lead the way again for the Sparta boys tennis team as they defeated Newton, 4-1, on Thursday.
Matkiwsky defeated his opponent quite easily, blanking Shawn Coiro, 6-0, 6-0. Wang breezed through his opponent as well, defeating Dugyala Ashish, 6-0, 6-1.
A bit of a scare for Sparta though came in the form of Jared DeLeu retiring after just one set. He did lose that set 6-4.
First singles partners Ben Curras and Vaughn Thomas defeated their opponents 6-3, 6-1. Second doubles won 6-2, 6-0.
While the loss of the DeLeu dampens what was mostly a dominant afternoon, Sparta still won all of their other matches against Newton to earn win number three. The only set the team lost as a whole was the third singles set.
Sparta has a few days to recover as they don't play until next Tuesday against High Point. They are 3-6 on the season.
