VERNON, NJ- Nick Matkiwsky and James Wang set the tone for the whole team Thursday against Vernon. Sparta High School boys tennis played their best match as a team as they beat Vernon with ease.
Matkiwsy defeated Vinny Dasaro, 6-0, 6-1. That was the first time Dasaro lost a set and a match. Matkiwsky had no issue in the win. He outlasted Dasaro on each point while dominating on serve and at the net. Wang defeated Nathaniel Nunez, 6-1, 6-3.
The success for the first two singles players was never a problem for Sparta. They have been the two most consistent players all year. Sparta needed just one win from their other players to take match. They got wins from all three on Thursday.
Jared DeLeu had a point in the first set where he was only up 3-2 and he was frustrated. After a talk with coach Mike Wille, he seemed rejuvenated. He only lost one game the rest of the way, defeating Matt VonEssen, 6-3, 6-0.
The first doubles matchup was much closer than the score reveals. Ben Curras and Connor Smetana defeated Joey Margroff and Alejandro Martinez, 6-1, 6-1.
It was an up and down week for Sparta, They swept Morris Hills, 5-0 and then lost to Randolph, 4-1, the next day. Thursday they beat Vernon, 5-0. If they can find their consistency, they could be a difficult team to beat with the duo of Wang and Matkiwsky.
The team improves to 2-5. They face Morris Knolls on Tuesday looking for win number three.
