SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Chess team returned triumphant from their tournament in Baltimore with three team titles and a number of individual awards.  While in Baltimore they beat teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Delaware.

Sparta High School won the tournament championship for the second year in a row.  Cameron Flores, Chrispohter Hakkengerg and Alex Schimpf also received individual recognition according to their coach, Tom Murray.

The Sparta Middle School team also won the championship.  They bested the DC International School on tiebreaks.

Helen Morgan’s students also brought home their second title in so many years.  Ian Bellush led the team with a third place finish.  Rowan Mendel and Surekha Selvaraj received individual recognition as well.

“The teams are currently preparing for state and national championships,” said Murray.
