SPARTA, NJ – It was perfect parade weather on Monday and the community came out for the Memorial Day. Flags were waving and people young and old were dressed in red white and blue.
Sponsored by the Sparta VFW this year’s Grand Marshall was Col. Codispti. She rode in a Humvee driven by past Commander John Durkot.
Children from Boy Scouts and Girl Scout, dance and gymnastic schools, little league softball and baseball marched. The Sparta Ambulance Squad, Fire Department and Police department were all represented.
The Sparta High School Marching Band played for the crowds.
Service organizations Sparta Elks and Sparta Women’s Club participated, as well as the Lake Mohawk Country Club board of trustees.
Miss Sparta and Miss North Jersey smiled and waved, perched on the back of the open cars.
Sparta Historical Society also had a number of antique cars in the parade.
Following the parade, the Memorial ceremony was held at the band shell. Part II will have details of the ceremony.
