RUTHERFORD, NJ – Sparta High School football repeated their state championship win on Saturday, December 6 at MetLife Stadium.  They defeated River Dell 31-23 to take the North Jersey Section 1 Group 3 title. This was the same championship match up as 2013.  River Dell gave them a more challenging game this year in comparison to last year’s 40-0 romp.

The steady rain made it primarily a running game with only a few passes finding their target.

Lucas Faria made his mark with three touchdown runs and a fumble recovery.  His first run into the end zone came on Sparta’s first drive.  It was answered shortly by a River Dell touchdown.

Teddy Fischer also had a big day.  His touchdown catch left them with six points as the extra point banked off of the upright of the goal post. In addition to the touchdown he had a field goal and three extra points.

The game remained close into the third quarter when River Dell was held scoreless.  In the fourth quarter Sparta secured the win putting 15 points on the board.

The Spartan team left town in the morning and returned in the late afternoon with a lights and sirens escort from police and fire departments.  Sparta finished the season 11-1.
