SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta High School student was out for a run on Monday evening in her neighborhood in Sparta Mountain when she was chased by a man in a van. Finishing out her run, the girl was heading up the hill on Mount Pleasant Road when she noticed a white van pull up behind her, according to the girl's mother.
There were two men in the van, according to the girl. One got out and opened the rear door of the van before chasing after her. The girl described the man as white around 40-years-old with brown hair, possibly wearing a red t-shirt, according to the girl.
The girl said she ran up the hill. She called her mother while she was running. Her mother immediately picked her up in her car. By then then van had left the area. They said they then called police.
Sparta Police Det. Keith Hannam said “Patrols did a check of the area and will continue to keep an eye out” for the van. They are calling it a “suspicious incident,” with no direct contact made between the man in the van and the girl.
“We have turned it over to our Detective Bureau. They will be checking with other agencies to see if there have been any similar incidents reported,” Hannam said. “Other local area towns have also been notified.”
“I just want people to know about this,” the mother said. “I really want them to find him before he gets another girl.”
