SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta High School girls basketball easily took the first round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex, with a big win over Vernon 52-13.  The Saturday morning game was held in Sparta’s auxiliary gymnasium featuring points from nine players.

Paige Smith led the Spartan effort with 11 points; two 2-pointers, two 3-pointers and two from the free throw line.

Emily Dilger added nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  Mary Rose Fischer, Hope Nafis and Erin Scott all contributed six.

It was a one-sided game from the start, with 17 points in the first quarter alone. 

“The Sparta Lady Spartans did a fantastic job defeating Vernon in the First Round of the H/W/S,” Head coach Catherine Willie said. “The entire team contributed, executed and got the win.  It was a really great team effort.”

Sparta is ranked seventh in the H/W/S Tournament.  They will go up against number 10 North Hunterdon on February 4 at home. 

The girls’ next game is on Tuesday at West Morris.
