NEWTON, NJ – The Sparta girls’ basketball team won its second-round game in the Hunterdon/Sussex/Warren Tournament with a victory over seventh-seeded Kittatinny on the road on Saturday, 40-32, after defeating North Warren, 54-29, on Jan 30.
Amanda Johnson led the team with 14 points including two from three-point range. Paige Smith also had a big game with nine points and contributed with 13 rebounds. Jackie Dowd put up six points.
The win was a team efforts with seven players putting points on the board; Erin Scott put up four, Erin Walsh had three, Beth Laing and Emmy Silberstein each had two.
The next round in the H/S/W puts tenth seed Sparta up against number two Hunterdon Central on Feb 13. The winner of that quarter final game goes on to play the winner of Voorhees – Phillipsburg on Feb 20.
The Sparta girls also defeated Randolph 40-28 in a regular season game at home. In that game Smith dominated with 23 goals, bringing her season total to 153. She had seven from inside the paint, two at 3-point range and three free throws. Emily Silberstein put up nine, all three pointers.
