SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta High School girls lacrosse had a big win over Pope John on Wednesday 21-9.  Playing on the Lions’ turf the Spartan dominated from start to the with a 15-4 score at halftime that kept the clock running.

Pope John scored two quick goals at the start of the second half but Sparta answered right back. 

“This was a great win,” captain Hailey Mead said.  “Monday was at turning point for us,” referring to the win at Mountain Lakes.

“It was a great team win, coming off the momentum of the Mounting Lakes win,” captain Bayleigh Takacs said. “We really moved the ball around.”

Captain Kaitlin Mead said, “It’s always good to beat Pope John.  They have good sports teams.  It’s always good to compete against Cam Stoner and Emma Valiente.  It’s always good to compete against a good team. I’m glad we were able to pull it off.”

Top scorer for Sparta was Kaitlin Mead with seven goals and three assists.  Courtney Klein, Lauren Neufeld and Takacs each found the net three times.  Klein also contributed with three assists, Neufeld had two.

Brianna Falco had two goals and four assists.  Samantha Charles, Julia Dykstra and Hailey Mead each added a goal to the total.  Charles had three assists and Mead had two.

Spartan goalie Madison Levinson stopped nine shots. 

“I love the rivalry between Sparta and Pope John, and the girls do too. Both teams always play with tremendous heart every time we face each other and yesterday was no exception,” coach Kate Brennan said. “Our girls played with a level of intensity that was really quite incredible, and I was very proud of not only their effort but their teamwork, on both ends of the field.”

The win on Wednesday brought the girls record to an even 3-3.  They will go to Westfield on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
