SPARTA, NJ - Kaitlin Mead had six goals and three assists in Sparta girls' lacrosse win over Kinnelon Friday, 21-9. Sparta scored 15 goals in the first half en route to the victory.
Hailey Mead had three goals and one assist but it was her efforts in the ground ball battles gave Sparta opportunities leading to the goal scoring outburst. Once they won the ball, they sped into the attack. They often shot the ball from straight on against the goalie.
Sparta's offense, however, was equally impressive showing patience, when the easy shot was not there. They effectively passed the ball from side to side, using movement to open shooting lanes. When they finally saw the chance they took the shot and often scored.
Jacqui Hallack had five goals. Julianna McGuire was the beneficiary of some of those grade A chances as she had two goals and three assists. She also had 11 face-off wins to spark the attack,
Goalie Madison Levinson had eight saves. She attacked shooters and held on to rebounds.
This game was end-to-end in the first half. Both teams transitioned from defense to offense well. Sparta used one player to get through the neutral zone and used the speed of that player to open space. Brianna Falco was great in this aspect and her work rate was higher than Kinnelon's.
Sparta is now 8-1. They face Pequannock on Tuesday.
