SPARTA, NJ – The girls from Sparta and Newton High School soccer teams faced off on Sparta’s home field in Station Park. Sparta lost to the Braves 1-0.
They both played tough with no score until the middle of the second half. Newton’s Kayleigh Furth scored the only goal of the game. Kass Wojcik got the assist, having drawn Sparta goalie Julia Flake out far enough for Furth to get by.
Sparta pushed hard in the last few minutes of the game. They even had a promising breakaway in the last minute but just could not get it in the net.
Newton’s keeper Karis Steele had six saves, while Flake had five.
Sparta’s Captain Hailey Mead said, “We need to come to games not expecting anything. We need to show up to practice and play as if it’s a game.”
“We need to play as a team and communicate more,” Sparta Captain Carly Seeland said.
Sparta will take their 3-3 record to Jefferson on Monday with a 4 p.m. start.
