SPARTA, NJ – Helen Morgan elementary school students went to video to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday this year. Their principal Doug Layman introduced the learning tool Flipgrid, according to Media Center Specialist Stephanie Bernardo. The tool allows students to record their responses to a question or an assignment using a video feature Bernardo said.
The students in Louise Shepherd’s class participated in a nationwide Flipgrid on the topic of Dr. Seuss, when they finally got to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday a week late due to snow,” Shepherd said.
The resource has students respond to a topic by creating a short video. It employs tools already familiar to many students using snapchat and Instagram. The school can control who gets to see the videos, including the possibility of inviting family members to view.
"The students had fun video recording themselves reading Dr. Seuss stories on their Chromebooks using, flipgrid then listening to each other's and recording personal comments,” Shepherd said. “Flipgrid is an engaging platform where even the shyest students can feel comfortable reading aloud. They also love being able to personalize their Flipgrid with stickers and drawings."
