BOSTON, MA – A Sparta High School graduate, currently attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy was recently named Athlete of the Week at the school.  Courtney McKenna, a freshman, received the honor for her contributions to the Coast Guard Bears softball team.

Playing in the PFX Games in Clermont, FL. McKenna went 5-5 with five RBI’s, a grand slam, two doubles and four runs in the team’s season opener.  Her batting average for the outing was .667 with 11 total bases and three extra base hits, according to the Coast Guard Bears’ publication. 

McKenna’s efforts won their game against Drew 13-6.  She is cited as a major factor in the Bears 2-1 season start.  In addition to the victory over Drew, Coast Guard beat Immaculata 12-4. 

McKenna played on the Sparta High School softball team that played all the way to the final round for the Group 3 and Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament. Off the field McKenna was a runner-up in the 2016 Miss Sparta contest.
