Sparta High School Announces December Teacher, Student and Student Athlete of the Month

SPARTA, NJ - The Principal of Sparta High School announces the teacher, students and student athlete of the month for December.  Each of the departments, the staff and coaches are asked to submit a candidate. 

The teacher of the month of December is Renee Dalia.  Dalia is a Special Education/English teacher. 

The Physical Education department recognizes period six sophomore Syera Plitt. "Syera served as team captain and goalie of her champion hockey team.  Syera can be counted on to give outstanding effort each and every day in Physical Education.  She is also a great teammate."

Robert Song was chosen to represent the English department.  His teacher said, " Robert is a hard worker who works well independently and with a group. He is someone the group can count on to do his part  and they depend on him to express his insightful ideas. Robert never complains about his work load and has completed every homework assignment since the beginning of the year. He is always polite and respectful. He participates well in class adding to our classroom discussions. It is a pleasure to have Robert in class." 

The representative from the Art department is Julia Liland.  " She is diligent and hard working on every project. She has a passion for art and always puts an amazing amount of effort into her creations. She also come up with truly unique ideas that stand out among her peers. She is responsible with deadlines and monitoring her own progress and strives for success while still taking artistic risks and challenging herself. 


Cameron Ekeman has been chosen from the Technology, Career and  Consumer Science department.  His teachers said, " Cameron is a student who possess ambition and an eagerness to learn. His work ethic and positive attitude are unmatched.  Cameron's attention to detail allows him to foresee challenges and improves accuracy when performing tasks."


Kanita Tariq was chosen from the World Language department.


Brett DeBlasio represents the Social Studies  department.


Brendon Erickson has been named Student Athlete of the Month.  His coach said, "I would like to nominate Brendon Erickson from the Ice Hockey Team.  He is currently (as of December)  leading the team with 13 goals and 11 assists. He recently eclipsed 100 overall points as a four varsity year player and assistant captain. His play has helped us to a 7-3-2 start and second place in the Halvorsen Division. 


"He holds a 3.28 GPA as a senior at SHS.  He is a certified EMT with Sparta Ambulance Squad and Second Cadet Lieutenant. He volunteers twice a week as an EMT.  This young man is respectful with his teammates, coaches and opponents."


The Math department chose Taylor Brady


The Music teachers have chosen Sarah Mathusek.  "Sarah has been a very dedicated member of the Sparta High School orchestra program.  She is the first chair violinist and leader of the Honors Philharmonic Orchestra. She has studied the violin privately for many years. Sarah also learned to play the viola and joined the Symphony orchestra on viola as well. She is an active member of the chamber music club and volunteers her time at many school and outside activities such as Teen Arts, Quartet festivals, Pit Orchestra, and special school events. She is also the first chair violinist of the Sussex County Youth Orchestra. Her talent matches her hard work and dedication."
