SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School girls basketball had a tough outing against Jefferson on Friday night, losing 49-30. The Spartans had plenty of opportunities but could not score in the first and third periods.
Emily Dilger led the girls effort with seven points and nine rebounds. Brianna Falco put up seven points with two 2-pointers and one from three point range. She also had five rebounds. Emily Lake also had seven points with four rebounds but got into foul trouble in the final period.
Erin Walsk contributed with five points and 11 rebounds. Page Smith also pulled down five rebounds.
"It was a great night for youth basketball. It was a tough night for us," Coach Cathy Willie said. "We played hard but we just couldn't put it in the bucket."
The team had invited girls from Sparta’s recreation programs to watch the game. Players from PAL and Upward programs got to play knock-out during halftime. There were also raffles with winners getting their choice of Sparta shirts. One winner also got free week at basketball camp this summer.
The girls’ record stands at 6-5. They will play at Pope John on Monday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The Sparta boys basketball team had traveled to Jefferson on Friday night where they beat the Falcons by three 56-53.
The boys were led by Dan Smith with 13 points including four free-throws, three 2-pointers and one from three-point range. Right behind him was Nick Lucas with 12 points; five 2-pointers and two free-throws.
Thomas Ferrara was also in double digits with 10 points, four field goals and two free-throws. Jack Simon contributed with eight points, two 3-pointers and two free throws.
Sparta boys will host Pope John on Monday, with a 7 p.m. tip-off. The boys are 10-3 for the season.
