SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School basketball teams went up against Pope John on Wednesday. The boys traveled to the Lions' home court where they lost, 75-45. The girls hosted in the main gym of SHS, where they won, 43-22.

Nick Lucas put up 12 points as the high scorer for Sparta with two three-point shots. Anthony Argula scored eight and Owen Mead and Dillon Mendel each added seven points. It was not enough to overcome the Lions’ Moustapha Diagne and James Scott, who each put 19 points. Pope John also had two players with 10 points on the night. 

For the Lady Spartans, Meghan Boryeskne led the team to victory with 18 points and 16 rebounds. They held the Lady Lions scoreless through the first period. Other high scorers for Sparta were Mackenzie Maguire with 12 and Maggie Jent with seven.

The girls’ record is now 2-5 and they will travel to Parsippany Hills on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.

The boys’ are off to a slow start with an 0-8 record.  They will host Parsippany Hills on Friday for a 7 p.m. start as well.
