SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta High School boys lacrosse season began on Wednesday on the road against Morristown. The season began well with a 10-8 victory.
Freshman Jesse West led the team with four goals. Senior Zach Eberding and Junior Owen Mead each scored twice and had two ground balls. Eberding also had three assists. Senior Lucas Faria and Junior Jack Bushey each added a goal to Sparta’s total. Faria had an assist as well.
Freshman Russell Eberding won 12 of 19 face offs.
Junior Danny Smith, Sparta’s Goalie, had 11 saves on the day.
This is Coach Tyler Meth’s second season with SHS Lacrosse. He said, “"I thought we did a great job today against a talented Morristown team. Guys stepped up all over the field. Many contributors to the win.
“Dan Smith and our defense played exceptionally well for a season opener. Our short sticks and our poles did a great job of limiting their top offensive players. On the other side of the field Jesse West was key in win today.
“The coaches and I have been preaching chemistry and buying into the team system. I couldn't be happier with how well they executed that philosophy today. We still have a long way to go with a ton of improvements to be made. But for now, this is a great step towards our goal.”
Sparta will play on Saturday, March 28 at Morristown-Beard. They are scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
