SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta High School field hockey team is honing their skills for the fall season.  While they lost five seniors to graduation, they have a dozen returning player on which to build a winning season.

Coach Kristin Lindsley is working with familiar faces:

  • Senior Hope Nafis at forward and midfield
  • Senior Alexis Gudenkaur at forward
  • Senior Angela Elzind in goal
  • Senior Maria Strongilos in backfield
  • Jillian Van Fleet at forward
  • Junior Isabella Tracy at forward
  • Junior Lucie Wolfson at midfield
  • Junior Caroline Kepler at midfield
  • Sophomore Delaney Forziati in goal
  • Sophomore Allie McGuire at forward and midfield,
  • Sophomore Lauren Groff at forward
  • Sophomore Kenzie Merwin at forward.

“Although we lost our defensive line and top scorer from last year, Jacquie Hallack, we return a lot of great talent from last year’s team,” Lindsley said. “I am thrilled to see the progression of our upcoming and returning players.”

The team will be welcoming senior Lauren Zanetakos, sophomores Taylor Canfield and Stephanie VIllar and Audrey Krajieck to the varsity team.

“Our goal is to strive to get better every day,” Lindsley said.  “We are looking to rebuild with leadership from our experienced senior leaders including this year’s captains Hope Nafis and Jillian Van Fleet.”

The team has already begun scrimmaging.  They will scrimmage at home on Thursday, August 31 at 10 a.m. against Whippany Park.  Their season begins on Thursday, September 7 on the road at Roxbury.  Their home opener is on Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. against Montville.
