CHATHAM, NJ –After a season opener loss to Roxbury, Sparta High School football beat Chatham 48-13. They were strong on both sides of the ball. Spartan Louis Ferrara contributed defensively with three interceptions.
The scoreboard reflected the offensive success. Sparta Junior Alex Miliken rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Tom DeGasperis threw for 173 yards and three touchdowns. DeGasperis connected with Al Falco, Dean Gennat and Miliken to put points on the board. Their record is now 1-1.
With three interceptions Louis Ferrara said, “I didn’t expect it. I was just out there doing what coach told me to do.”
Coach Frank Marciano said, “We were just doing our jobs, getting out there running our offense and running our defense. We played our game.”
Talking to the players after the game Marciano said, “We are now one and one. We’ll just keep building to two and one then three and one.”
Reminiscent of last year, Sparta lost their season opener to Roxbury then went on to win each successive game. The Spartans finished the season with a record of 11-1, including the state championship where they beat River Dell for the second year in a row.
Sparta will host their home opener next Saturday against 0-2 Montville.
