SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School Girls basketball lost to Roxbury on Friday 30-26.  In the main gymnasium at Sparta the Spartan girls put up a good showing, leading for the first three quarters, they were not able to finish it off.

It was a total team effort for Sparta with nine players putting points on the scoreboard. 

Katie Hastings and Emmy Silberstein led the team with five points each.  Hastings had two for two each and a free throw, Silberstein got a basket from three-point range and added two free throws to the total.

Emily Lake got both of her free throws and another two contributing four points to the Lady Spartan’s efforts.

Gretchen Bowie was on the board for three.  Amanda Johnson, Beth Laing, Paige Smith and Erin Walsh each got two.  Erin Scott made her free throw to get one as well. Smith, Walsh, Scott, Lake, Johnson, Hastings and Bowie all did their share in the defensive zone grabbing rebounds.

Coach Cathy Willie said, "Our team played extremely hard on Friday nights' opener versus Roxbury. The team gave an incredible defensive effort, but we fell short in the end.  Really proud of the young ladies, and look forward to their hard work paying off." 

Sparta will travel to Chatham on Monday for a 7 p.m. start.
