SPARTA, NJ – It was two in a row for the Sparta High School girls basketball team this week. On Monday the Spartans beat Kittatinny Cougars in a hard fought contest. With big second and third periods for Sparta, the final score was 50-44.
Emily Silberstein led the team with 15 points, including three from 3-point range. She also grabbed four rebounds.
Gretchen Bowie put up 11 points and contributed with six rebound and four steals. Erin Scott and Paige Smith each put up eight points. Scott had three 2-pointers and two free throws with 10 rebounds to help their cause. Smith had three 2-pointers and four free throws.
On Tuesday the Sparta girls team hosted Vernon with a lopsided 55-5 victory. Smith put up 15 points; all but one from inside the key. She also had seven rebounds and seven steals for a big game.
Bowie added eight and Scott added seven to the final score.
Sparta Coach Catherine Wille said, “The girls’ varsity defeated an outstanding Kittatinny ball club on Monday evening. It was a back and forth game through late in the 4th quarter. We were excited to pull out the victory in the end.
“We also defeated Vernon last night. Our team is on a 3 and 0 winning streak as they enter the second half of the season. We play a tough game on Thursday versus Morris Hills.”
The Sparta girls’ season record now stands at 5-8. Morris Hills will come to Sparta on Thursday.
