UNION, NJ – The weather seemed to sympathize with the Sparta High School girls lacrosse team as the skies opened up with less than 10 minutes to go in the NJSIAA Group 2 Championship game against Haddonfield. Sparta lost 18-11.

With a slow start the girls came back onto the field after halftime ready to fight for the win.  The Spartans brought it to 14-10 with four unanswered goals, but that was a close as it would get.  With the rain came four more Haddonfield goals, while Sparta was only able to find the net once more.

“We really picked up in the second half,” Captain Kaitlin Mead said.  “I’m glad to end my senior year here, at this level.”

This was Haddonfield’s second trip to Kean for the state final game.  Last year they fell to Bernards, this year they took the trophy.

“We knew they were a good team but we have never played them before so we weren’t sure what to expect,” Captain Hailey Mead said.

Kaitlin Mead put up four goals and won 10 faceoffs.  Brianna Falco put three in the net and won seven faceoffs.  Hailey Mead scored twice.  Samantha Charles and Lauren Neufeld each contributed a goal.

“It’s not the outcome we hope for, but I’m definitely proud of these girls,” Captain Bayleigh Takacs said.  “I hope they take what we learned this year and use it next year.”

Coach Kate Brennan said, “I love these girls and I’m really proud of them.”
