WASHINGTON, NJ – History did not repeat as Sparta High School girls lacrosse beat Bernards on Tuesday 16-15 earning a shot at the NJSIAA Group 2 title. Last year the two teams faced off in the semi-final round with Bernards taking that game by one.
"This win was something the girls had on their list from the very first day of the season," Coach Kate Brennan said. "They committed to not only getting back on the field with Bernards, but to winning if they got a second chance, and they put every ounce of their energy into accomplishing that goal last night." To say that I am proud of them would be a terrible understatement. I am thrilled for them, in awe of their efforts, and so, so proud to be their coach!
“It was a tremendous win against Bernards today, especially knowing how strong of a team they have been in the past,” Captain Kaitlyn Mead said.
Playing at Warren Hills, Sparta went into halftime down by four but battled back putting 12 in the net in the second half.
Briana Falco and Kaitlyn Mead had five goals each. Falco also had an assist, won six faceoffs and grabbed two ground balls.
Mead won 12 faceoffs.
Hailey Mead and Bayleigh Takacs each contributed two goals and an assist.
Lauren Neufeld and Courtney Klein each had a goal.
Madison Levinson made eight saves.
Mead said, “We are extremely excited and eager to go into the next round and be challenged by a team like Haddonfield.”
"To say that I am proud of them would be a terrible understatement," Brennan said. "I am thrilled for them, in awe of their efforts, and so, so proud to be their coach."
The girls will play for the Group 2 title against Haddonfield at Kean University on June 2 at noon.
