SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School girls soccer shut out Newton on Saturday morning, winning 5-0, under a bright blue autumn sky four.
Kaitlin Mead had two goals and an assist. Captain Kelly Carolan and Cayleigh Glew and Brooke Rossiter each had a goal. Carolan and Bailey Kellenberger each had an assist as well.
The win “meant a lot because our momentum was down” from losing their last two games, according to Glew.
Carolan credited Coach Jamie Barker. “Barker gave the seniors a talk before the game to fire us up to leave our mark. It worked well to get seniors to lead the game.”
“It was an important win,” Senior Captain Emily Sigillo said. “We’re going into tough games, starting Monday with Mendham. Five – zero is a huge confidence builder.”
Sparta had two goalie take turns in net. Julia Flake had four saves and Lia Gaccione had one.
The girls record now stands at 5-2 as they prepare to host Mendham on Monday with a 4 p.m. start time.
