SPARTA, NJ — The girls soccer team beat Montville on Wednesday 2-1. Keeper Julia Flake had 10 stops keeping the Mustangs to one. Mikayla Bivona had the goal in the first half. Faith Stewart had the go ahead goal in the second half.
Cassie Hagler and Kate Mazzella had assists.
“We’ve been working on playing together,” Flake said.
Good chemistry was evident as Sparta held the ball in their end for most of the second half. Montville came close when Flake was drawn out of the net. The ball spit out to Montville and, with Savanah Rode covering the net, Montville’s shot hit the post.
“When #19 came forward, it was a good thing that we covered her,” Sam Charles said. “She a great player.”
“We’ve worked on being able to stretch the field and get better at having all players in front of the net take good quality shots,” Captain Bailey Kellenberger said. “We want the other team to know we’re here to win from the first time we step on the field.”
The girls will host Newton on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. They take on the Braves having put together a record of 7-2.
