NEW YORK, NY – Sparta High School girls track finished eighth in the country at the New Balance National Indoor Championship at the Armory in New York City on Saturday, March 10.

The 4x 55 meter shuttle hurdle team of Carlie Wilson, Emily Kosker, Zoe Canzoniero and Gianna Macones finished their event in 34.16 according to Coach Rich Heckman.

This was the sixth time the girls ran this relay, according to Heckman. In the previous competitions the event was a 4 x 51.5 meters with each athlete going over four hurdles.  For this national event they would compete in a 4 x 55 meter with five hurdles.

Heckman explained the hurdles the four girls had to overcome to earn a spot at the New Balance national event.

First the four had to get a qualifying time in order to participate in the national event.  At the December 20 meet they had a third-place finish.  Two days later they finished second and set a new school record, with Katie Hannan substituting for Emily Kosker.

Next on December 30 the girls finished fourth.  Then in the NJSIAA Group 2 Relays they finished fifth.

“For the last race of the season the girls finally got to run the race they needed to qualify,” Heckman said. “The best they could do was finish second.”

Heckman said, “The nationals was a career race they were looking for.  Every clicked as each girl ran the flawless race they needed to accomplish this feat. Each team that had defeated them during the season was now looking up on the results board to see the Spartans above them.”
