BAYVILLE, NJ – For the first time in the history of Sparta High School the girls track team has earned the title on NJSIAA Group 2 Champions. They did it with the multifaceted skills of only three athletes; Gianna Macones, Carlie Wilson and Zoe Canzoniero.
The girls qualified to compete in the state group finals by finishing in the top six at the sectional level. Gianna Macones qualified in four events. Carlie Wilson competed in three events and Zoe Canzoniero represented Sparta in one event.
The team finished fourth in a field of 20 teams at the sectionals.
The Group meet took place over two “hot and muggy” days at Central Regional High School, Coach Richard Heckman said. All three Spartans scored points in their events. With so many talented high school track athletes competing the winning team could not be determined until the final event.
The three Spartan girls put up 45 points and the final outcome was out of their hands.
Had the 4 x 400 meter race be won by Demarest or River Dell they would have taken the title, according to Heckman. The race was down to the final 100 meters of the event, when Governor Livingston and Newton pulled ahead to finish first and second, taking the trophy from Demarest or River Dell and placing in Sparta’s hands.
Next up, Macones and Wilson will be competing in the Meet of Champions. There are no team points or titles awarded at this event, it is a showcase of the best individuals in the state, according to Heckman. Macones will be competing in the long and triple jumps as well as the 100 meter and 100 meter hurdles. Wilson advances in the high jump and 400 meter hurdles.
