SPARTA, NJ- Visual arts students were celebrated at the Sparta High School annual Arts Gala on Thursday night in the media center at the school. Seventeen new members were inducted into the National Arts Honor Society as well.
The senior members were also honored. Twenty artists received their cords for graduation and a rose to give to someone who has influenced their lives.
All five art teachers, Spencer Davis, Christy Graham, Jennifer Kucher-Csaltos, Kristin Lindsley and Christine O’Brien-Mase were present with family members and friends to celebrate the artists and their art and accept the honor society inductees.
Prior to the ceremony guests wandered among the displays of sculptures, paintings, drawings and photography. Interim Principal Cecil Beavers provided keyboard music.
Joshua Gorman led the flag salute to get the ceremony started. Beavers gave opening remarks. He spoke about the vision necessary to create art through a story about Walt Disney. He relayed a story about Disney mapping out his plan for Disney World in a hospital bed to a reporter.
When the park opened six years later, someone remarked it was too bad he did not live to see it built To which the response was he did see it and that is why we are here.
“These students have to vision to see it, that’s why we are here,” Beavers said.
Chapter Vice President Emma Bova in her opening remarks told the guests it was “a stress reliever to express myself through art.”
“I’m so proud of all of the art done here,” AP Art student Caitlin Scarpa said. Scarpa explained the AP students had to create 24 pieces throughout the year, 12 requisite and 12 of their choice. Five of those pieces had to be sent to the College Board to affirm their qualification for AP credit.
“Art is a place to escape the word or embrace it,” Scarpa said. “It is a place to be you.”
“It is an amazing feat to complete AP Art Studio because the final exam goes on all year,” Chapter Secretary Mikayla Bivona said as she thanked everyone who made the evening possible in her closing remarks.
Kucher Csaltos closed out the evening. “Congratulations to the inductees and the seniors” as she too thanked the staff that supported to program and the Art Gala. “We are an excellent team but the students’ passion is astonishing.”
