SPARTA, NJ - Last week, the Sparta High School World Language department welcomed new members to their honors societies. The inductees were sworn into the Sparta Chapter of their respective languages of Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish.
Principal Dr. Daniel Johnson offered opening remarks, encouraging students to embrace their induction and take to heart the teachings of their language teachers. He congratulated students for their remarkable achievements in cultural learning and in becoming global citizens.
Johnson also mentioned that none of the students’ achievements would have been possible without the dedication and strength of the language teachers: Leonard Zang, Serge Wessles, Valerie Cole, Christiane Wessels, Brigitte Blahut, Eric Hood, William Brennan, Barbara Maneri, Elsa Schock, and Adriana Toma.
Assistant Principal Janet Ferraro, Assistant Principal Steve Stoner and Superintendent Dennis Tobin were also in attendance. Tobin congratulated the students on their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue to do well on their academic path.
The candle lit ceremony was led by the President and Secretary of each honors society. The President and Secretary for each society, respectively, were:
- Sydney Slouka and Adrian Espinosa Mandarin Chinese
- Christina Simon and Jeremy Valshtein French
- Jamie Lowenstien and Kira Manniello German
- Maria Christodulu and Julia Silvestri Russian and
- David Amiel and Lauren Scaglione Spanish.
Special honors were extended to the two students who hold dual memberships in honors societies. Julia Brozowski was recognized for German and Spanish. John Brozowski was recognized for German and French.
The inductees’ procession and recession were accompanied by the student chamber orchestra under the direction of Loni Bach. The ceremony ended with refreshments in the cafeteria.
World Language Supervisor Steven Schels said, "Every evening we get to spend celebrating student achievement is a wonderful event, and this was no exception. I congratulate all of our inductees on their well-earned honor, as well as all of their teachers, who work so hard to help them reach this level of academic success and proficiency in a foreign language."
