SPARTA, NJ - A fawn, a wolf, a lion, a pair of beavers, an elf, and a witch take over the stage of Sparta High School's auditorium this week in the fall drama production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Drama teacher Vicki Reed directs the 32 students, divided into the "Witch" cast and the "Lion" cast.
The part of the White Witch is played by senior Haley Barna. This is her second time in the lead role under Reed. She portrayed Hermia in Midsummer's Night Dream this summer. "Mrs. Reed is really good," said Barna, adorned with crown and scepter. "I am so happy for the opportunity to have the lead in this show."
Barna is hoping to pursue musical theater at either Hofstra University, Reed's alma mater, or Ithica College.
This production is an adaptation of the fantasy children's novel by C. S. Lewis. In the story, set during World War II, children are evacuated from London to an old country home, in which they discover a magical wardrobe; portal to Narnia, land of mythical creatures. The children have many adventures during their visits to Narnia.
There are four performances beginning Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Additional shows are on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
Lucy, one of the children, is portrayed by Lauren Morris in the "Witch" cast. This is her first time in a leading role. Morris is a sophomore who only began acting the year before. She is "excited to be part of this show."
"It is so different from anything I've seen the school do" Morris said. "It is everything; it is happy, it is sad, it's exciting. It's for everyone. It's really good."
