SPARTA, NJ- World language students were honored at the board of education meeting on Monday.  Scott Kercher announced 37 students earned the New Jersey Seal of Biliteracy. This is a 20% increase over last year, according to Kercher.

The program is available to students at Sparta High School who have demonstrated proficiency in the language either by successfully taking the AP test as a junior or on the three and a half hour STAMP test in their junior or senior year.

The STAMP test measures their proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking, Kercher said.

“This program fits our district mission to prepare student for post-secondary education and future workplace readiness,” Kercher said. “The development of bi-literate students can cultivate the empathetic and informed citizens and leaders of tomorrow.”

"The Sparta Board of Education is very proud of all the Sparta students who achieved the seal of biliteracy," board president Kim Bragg said. "This prestigious academic accomplishment is well deserved."

The seal will be affixed to the students’ transcripts.

Principal Ronnie Spring said, "These students' accomplishment of earning their Seal of Biliteracy is a true testament to their hard work and dedication and the dedication of their world language teachers."

The world language teachers were recognized, “for all of their hard work in support of our students.” Amanda Sachenski, Christiane Wessels, Serge Wessels, Eric Hood came forward with their students.

Students were called to the front of the room to be acknowledged.  Joseph Shnyder qualified in both French and Spanish, “making him tri-literal.”
