SPARTA, NJ -- On Friday Jan 9, the Sparta high school girls’ varsity ski team races in their first Giant Slolam league race and finished third out of eight teams. “We have wrapped up our first week of racing with some great early season results,” said Coach Kyle Markovitz.
Juliana Kaminski finished first with a fifth place finish over all. Close behind her were Margaret Zembrzuska at 17, Alia Flanigan at 18 and Rachel Stote finishing 22. The girls’ team has started out strong with nearly all members of the team from last year.
The boys’ varsity team shared in the girls’ success Friday night. The boys finished fourth out of nine teams with a team time of 5:07.67. The boys’ team has only one returning varsity racer from last year. Rex Anderson, who lead the boys with a twelfth place finish. Behind him, freshman Matt McAndris finishing 20, Chester Sears 21 and Justin Allan 23 kept their finishes close to complete the team time.
"Our varsity team showed that they prepared in training and can step up with some great results even though many have not raced varsity previously. Matt McAndris, Justin Allan, Jared Kish and Jack McGovern each finished their first varsity race like they had done it many times before," said Markovitz.
The JV girls showed promise with five freshman girls skiing on the team. Hanna Newbold came in sixth, finishing first on the team. Serena Calafati with right behind her with a seventh place finish overall.
The JV boys had three solid finishes with newcomer Ryan Smetana finishing first on the team and 14 overall.
On Saturday the varsity teams raced in their first invitational at Mountain Creek. The girls’ team finished fourth out of nine teams, continuing their success into the weekend. Juliana Kaminski and her sister Shannon Kaminski finished first and second on the team with 14 and 16 place finishes over all.
The boys’ team finished sixth out of 12 teams with Rex Anderson and Matt McAndris finishing first and second on the team with 21 and 23 place finishes.
The Ski teams have a League Giant Slalom race on Tuesday at Mountain Creek.
