SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School girls softball had an early finish in the first round of the NJSIAA North Section 1 Group 3 tournament early defeating Garfield 10-0 in the fifth inning.
Paige Smith worked both sides of the plate to contribute to the win. Smith pitched a no hitter, five inning shut-out and went 3-for-3, scoring twice with two RBIs.
Second seed in the tournament, the girls came out strong with four runs in the first inning and five in the second. One more in the fifth ended the game early.
Erin Scott and Olivia Bouma-Hannam each added two to the run total. Scott had a double and an RBI. Bouma-Hanam also had an RBI.
Scott’s career run total stands at 54 in her four years on varsity. She also has 50 career RBIs.
Isabella DeFilipis went 2-for-3 scoring once with two RBIs.
Carolyn Jacobs went 3-for-3 scoring once. Tatiana Esteva-Ingram scored once and added two RBIs. Kate Esso also added a run to the total.
Sparta faces number 10 seed Demarest on May 23 at home. They now have a season record 16-6.
