SPARTA, NJ - The Sparta High School spring band concert took place Tuesday, May 19. The freshmen and symphonic bands and the wind ensemble gave a wonderful performance, led by conductors Dr. Deborah Gianuzzi, Mr. Andrew Lopez and student teacher Mr. Joshua Jenkins.
After each of the three bands played separately, the three bands joined together on stage to play a Civil War medley. This was the first time the three bands had ever been on stage together. The song was one of the pieces featured during the recent band trip to Boston, MA.
The concert also marked the last high school band concert for the 23 graduating seniors, a night they are likely to always remember.
Many awards were given out to recognize the seniors’ hard work and dedication to the program.
- The Matt Cowell scholarship was awarded to a senior percussionist, Alec Hopper.
- The John Philip Sousa award, the highest honor for a band member, was given to Laura Leggiero.
The Sparta Music Boosters gave out 4 scholarships:
- Jack Donahue,
- Brittany Rivera,
- Matt Rotondi and
- Laura Leggiero.
Two Director’s Awards were given out:
- From Lopez to a senior in the symphonic band - Robin Chaney
- From Gianuzzi to a senior in the wind ensemble - Nicole Sileo.
"The concert showed off how hard the students have worked and how much they have grown since the last concert. It was a beautiful night. Everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do,” remarked Gianuzzi. “The performance was tremendous.”
The music department has two upcoming concerts, the high school orchestra concert on May 26 and the district jazz band concert on May 28.
