SPARTA, NJ--New Jersey has unique bands every year comprised of high school students from Sussex, Warren, Morris, Passaic, Bergan, Essex and, Hudson counties. The rigorous audition process includes playing scales, individual solo compositions, and sight-reading a passage for a blind panel of high school directors.
Three students from Sparta High School successfully auditioned for the North Jersey Senior Region Band, Orchestra and the Junior Region Band.
Sophomore, Alex Hofgesang was selected to the Senior Region Wind Ensemble on both tuba and bass-trombone. He chose to perform on bass-trombone with both the Wind Ensemble and the Senior Region Orchestra.
Elizabeth Ukstins and Joshua Williams were selected as freshman to the Junior Region Band.
Hofgesang will now go onto the NJ All-State Band to perform at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Feb. 20.
Sparta High School Band Director Dr Deborah Gianuzzi said, "These kids are our very best. Their hard work has paid off and the experience they will have these guest conductors will only enhance their high school music experiences. Andrew Lopez and I are so proud of these kids."
These honors bands were created to unite hundreds of high school students from 64 high schools who all share a unique passion for instrumental music at a high level with professional conductors. Each group has between 60 to 100+ members. Every year a different school district holds the rehearsals and concert.
