SPARTA, NJ -The Sparta wrestling team had an impressive performance last weekend at the District 3 wrestling tournament held at Kittatinny. Eight Spartans advanced into the semifinals, with five wrestlers proceeding into the finals. They ended the day with two champions, Garrett Gerndt at 106 and Ian Burke at 138. They are the first district champs Sparta has had since 2007.
Placing second was Walker Schmitzer at 145, Nathan Sowers at 160 and Al Falcon at 170. A strong third by Gavin Lally to help Spartans place third overall as a team. They only fell short to High Point and Kittatinny.
These first- and second-place winners now advance to the regional round, scheduled to take place at Wallkill Valley, where they will strive to continue their journey to compete at the state tournament held in Atlantic City.
Coach Battaglia said, "Congratulations to all the wrestlers for a successful season. Every wrestler, at every level, played a key roll in our success this year."
He went on to express appreciation for the other coaches and, "thank you to all the fans that came out to watch us wrestle and cheer us on."
The Wallkill Valley Regional tournament is set to take place on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Then they will be back at Wallkill on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.
