HARDYSTON, NJ – It was the end of the season for the Sparta High School Ice Hockey Team.  They lost to Kinnelon in the state playoff game on Monday night at Skylands Ice World 3-1.  It was a tight game with the first goal not coming until 3:55 left in the second period.  Kinnelon scored first and Sparta’s Captain Nick Clayton answered right back 47 seconds later.  He was assisted by Brendon Erickson.

Kinnelon scored again a few seconds into the third period, making the score 2-1.  The third Kinnelon goal came over the protests of the Sparta coaches that the Kinnelon player was off sides.   It remained 3-1 to the end of the game.

Captain Goalie Ryan Bartholomew had a busy night stopping 38 shots on goal. Coming into this game Bartholomew was ranked ninth in the state for saves with 567.   Including the Kinnelon game he saw 645 shots, saving 605, for a .938 save percentage.

Nick Clayton finished as the team’s leading goal scorer with 22, followed by Brendon Erickson with 11 and Connor Erickson with 10.

Brendon Erickson led the team in assists with 25, followed by Connor Erickson with 14 and Jeremy Dericks with 13. 

Brendon Erickson also led the team in total points with 36, followed by Nick Clayton with 29, Connor Erickson with 24 and Jeremy Dericks with 19.  Rich Clark had 12 points and Mike Holovach and Nick Macierowski each finished the season with 10 points. 

Sparta finished their season with a record on 11-6-4.
