STOCKHOLM, NJ – A short bench, made even shorter by preseason injuries and illness has the Sparta High School Ice Hockey team off to a rocky start.  On Saturday, the Spartans faced off against Mount Olive.  They lost 6-3.

Two of the Sparta goals were scored by Assistant Captain Brandon Erickson.  His first goal came on an assist from his brother Assistant Captain Connor Erickson and Captain Jeremy Dericks.  His second goal came on an assist from Dericks and Captain John Redding.  Connor Erickson had the other goal, assisted by Brandon Erickson and Redding. 

Mount Olive had three penalties.

Sparta’s goalie Dalton Schroepfur saw 30 shots on goal.  Sparta took 36 shot at Mt Olive’s goalie.   

Dericks said, "We played hard.  It's still early in the season and there is still plenty of time to work out some kinks."

The Spartans will play Mendham on Tuesday on their home ice at Skyland’s Ice World at 5:30 p.m.

SPARTA, NJ – A man speeding on Route 15 faces drug charges despite having a medical marijuana card.  Muhammad Khan, 26, of Valley Stream, New York was stopped by Police Officer Erick Finley driving his red Lexus SUV 75 mph in a 55 mph zone, police report.

One Injured in Two-Family House Fire in Newton

NEWTON, NJ—One man was injured, while three others escaped unharmed when a two-family two story apartment house caught fire on Saturday.  On January 27 at around 6:26 a.m. Newton Police received a 9-1-1 call from a passerby reporting a house on fire.
