MORRISTOWN, NJ - Traveling to Mennen Arena, the Sparta High School ice hockey team played to a tie against Parsippany Regional on Monday. The game remained scoreless into the second period, when Parsippany's Nick Grinvalds scored on the power play, adding to his total that has him ranked first in the state for goals, with 36, as of Saturday, Jan 15.

Sparta was finally able to get one in the net on a shorthanded goal by Captain Nick Clayton on an assist from Brendon Erickson and Jeremy Dericks. With only a little more than two minutes left in the game, neither team could manage to break the tie. 

As of Saturday, Jan 15, Clayton is in a five-way tie, ranking 13th in the state for goals with 17.

Brendon Erickson is in an eight-way tie, ranking 10th in the state for assists, also with 17. 

Sparta’s bench was light with three players missing the game due to illness.

Sparta Goalie Captain Ryan Bartholomew stopped 21 shots. Bartholomew is currently sixth in the state for saves with 391, ranks 14th for Shots Against with 406 and a rank of 15 for Save Percentage with 1.015.

This tie brings Sparta’s record to 8-4-4 with the varsity going against Mount Olive on Wednesday, Jan 21 at 7:45 p.m. at Mennen Arena.
