STOCKHOLM, NJ – Sparta Jefferson United was dealt a crushing blow losing to undefeated Roxbury 9-2. The teams clashed on Saturday night at Skylands Ice World.
Early in the contest the play was tough but even. It was a multitude of penalties assessed against a player leaving SJU shorthanded for nine minutes.
Roxbury scored two unanswered goals in the first period. Zack Harmel scored a shorthanded goal in the second period. Connor Erickson would get the only other Sparta goal coming midway through the third period.
“We were playing well against a team we knew would be tough,” said Captain Jeremy Dericks. “Then we took a bad penalty and it took us out of the game.”
Logan Hanek saw 33 shots in net for JSU. Roxbury’s goalie also saw 33 shots.
With a record of 4-2-1 Sparta Jefferson United will play a non-league game against Nutley on Monday. The puck will drop at 5:40 at Skylands Ice World.
