WAYNE, NJ – The tie score only tells part of the story of the Sparta Jefferson United ice hockey game. On Wednesday, the team played a non-league game against West Milford at the Ice House in Wayne. The final score as 4-4.
The Highlander’s goalie Nick Johansson saw 42 shots while the SJU goalie Logan Hanek had 16 pucks come his way.
SJU was off to a good start with two unanswered goals in the first period. Mike King was the first to score on the assist from Zach Harmel and Jaxon Mase. Mase scored next, assisted by CJ Leonardo and Harmel.
It was West Milford’s turn in the second period, tying the score then going ahead in the third.
Andrew Lopuch brought the team back to a tie with a third period goal assisted by Colin Higdon and Sergei O’Sullivan. Mike King got the go ahead SJU goal, assisted by Lopuch.
They held the lead until the final minute of the game. West Milford called a time out, then pulled their goalie when play resumed. SJU lost the battle in front of the net with :45 left on the clock.
SJU had an overall record of 10-4-3. They sit in second place, as has been the case for most of the season, behind Roxbury. The SJU Halvorsen record stands at 5-2-1.
