SPARTA, NJ - The second time was the charm for Sparta Jefferson United when they played Mendham on their home on Saturday, beating them 5-1.  The first time the two teams met this season, the game ended in a 4-4 tie at Mennen Arena.

Sparta Jefferson United took advantage of power plays for their first four goals.  Connor Erickson got the first one, assisted by Jeremy Dericks and Zack Harmel. At the end of the first period Nick Montone scored on the assist by Nolan Kafafian and CJ Leonardo.

The second period was a repeat of the first, two power play goals.  Matt Redding scored on the assist by Brendan Erickson and Colin Higdon.  Connor Erickson scored the fourth SJU goal assisted by Redding.

The fifth and final SJU goal was scored by Zack Harmel, on the assist from Jaxon Mase and CJ Leonardo.

SJU's goalie Logan Hanek saw 17 Minutemen shots.  Tanner Brown stopped 45 SJU shots for Mendham. 

Both Brendan and Connor Erickson are in the running for NJ.Com Top Assist Leader in the MCSSIHL.  The voting comes to a close on Monday Jan. 30 at noon. 

  • Brendan has 53 goals and 61 assists in his varsity career.
  • Connor has 45 goals 50 assists and in his varsity career.

Mendham was able to get one with less than a minute in the third period. 

SJU will play Paramus on Monday at Skylands Ice World.  The puck will drop at 5:40 p.m.
