SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man was taken into custody on numerous drug charges after being pulled over on Route 15 Sparta police say. 

On May 12 Cpl Dave Pridham was patrolling on the northbound side of the highway when he saw a 2009 Honda “having a difficult time maintaining a lane of travel,” according to police.  The car crossed the fog and dotted lines several times before Pridham stopped the car.

Pridham suspected the driver, Lance Beckham was under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.  The 28 year-old Sparta resident allowed the officers to search his car.  According to police they found 30 packets of heroin and assorted drug paraphernalia.

After undergoing field sobriety tests, Beckham was taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters.

He was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert who determined Beckham was driving under the influence of drugs police say. 

Beckham was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic needles.  He was also charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to maintain a single lane of travel, careless driving and possession of controlled, dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. 

Beckham was released the next day pending a court date.

Sparta Cpl Rob Fraser, Police Officers Tom Snyder, Police Officer Taylor May  and Sgt Seamus Geddis from the Franklin Borough Police Department all assisted with the investigation.
