SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man faces Driving While Intoxicated charges after running a red light at 3 a.m. on March 4. Sparta Police Cpl. Rick Smith saw Joathan Schwickrath speeding on Route 15 north. Schwickrath, driving a 2000 Mercedes, exited at Sparta Junction where he went through the red light at the top of the ramp, according to police.
Smith and Sparta Cpl. Craig Grauerholz stopped the 24-year-old. When they spoke with him the officers suspected Schwickrath was intoxicated. They had him perform field sobriety tests and then took him into custody, according to police.
Schwickrath was taken to Sparta Police Department headquarters for breath testing and processing. He was charged with DWI, speeding, reckless driving and failure to obey a traffic signal.
He was released to a sober adult several hours later pending a court date.
