SPARTA, NJ – A traffic stop ended with drug charges for a Sparta man.  On October 4 at 9:13 p.m. Police Officer Erick Finley stopped Nicholas Ryan for not having lights on the front or back license plate, according to police.

When Finley spoke with the 20-year-old the officer smelled marijuana.  Finley got assistance from Sparta Cpl. Schomp and Police Officer Guido as he searched the car, police say.

Ryan admitted to officers he had smoked pot earlier in the day.  Finley found a small ziplock bag of marijuana in Ryan’s pants pocket.  Police took Ryan into custody and brought him to the Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing, police report.

Ryan was charged with maintenance of lamps, failure to inspect, controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  He was released with a court date.
