SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta Middle School student has been awarded third place in a national writing contest. Kavya Kamath, a seventh-grade student in Cherie Shefferman’s STEP program.
Shefferman explained the STEP students are able to select an interest group for their academic assistance period at the end of each day.
“Our Wednesday interest group is Book Club/Writing Contests. Throughout the first two marking periods, many of the students explored the theme of Change through narration, exposition or poetry and submitted their finished pieces to the contest,” Shefferman said.
Kamath took third in the Poetry division. In addition to receiving a certificate, Kamath’s poem will be published in an issue of Writers’ Slate. According to Shefferman, it is expected to be published in the Spring 2017 edition of the online journal in mid-April.
Kamath will also be invited to attend the 2017 Literature Festival held at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas in October.
