SPARTA, NJ – Three people from Brooklyn in a Lexus stopped for driving 88 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 15 were taken into custody by Sparta police. On January 7 around 11 a.m. Officer Erick Finley saw the speeding car, calling ahead he had Officer Guido pull the car over, police report.
Both officers spoke with the driver, Biata Gerasymenko, 22, and smelled marijuana in the car. The passenger, Gabriella Ponzo, also 22 years-old, said she had an empty ziplock bag that had previously contained marijuana. She also said she had a marijuana grinder, police say.
The backseat passenger 24-yaer-old Kenneth Wu said he had a little weed on him, when police told them the car was going to be searched. With all three passengers out of the car it was searched and the officers found a mason jar containing marijuana, a marijuana grinder and a marijuana pipe, police said.
Wu said the contraband was his. Ponzo and Wu were taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department. Gerasymenko had a suspended New York license and was also taken to Sparta Police Department, police report.
Gerasymenko was charged with speeding, careless driving and driving without a valid license. She was given a court date and released. Ponzo and Wu were charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. They were also given a court date and released.
