SPARTA, NJ - A black GMC pickup truck caught the attention of a another driver as it drifted between lanes on Route 15. The driver called the Sparta Police Department. Sparta Cpl. Scott Elig saw the truck with Pennsylvania license plates exit Route 15 at the Sparta Junction, according to police.
The truck, driven by Tom Beatty, 49, continued to drift on and off the road, as Elig followed. Elig stopped Beatty on Route 517 near Station Road, according to police.
After speaking with Beatty, Elig suspected he was intoxicated. Elig had him perform field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. Beatty, from Shohola, PA was brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing and breath testing.
Beatty was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and failure to maintain an lane. He was released to a sober adult pending a court date.
