SPARTA, NJ –The driver involved in a one car accident on Route 15 is facing multiple drug charges. On August 10, Sparta Cpl. Frank Schomp and Cpl. Joseph Antonello went to investigate a crash reported in the area of Wilson Drive. They found Tomas Molina had crashed his minivan into a utility pole, police report.
The 31-year-old Bloomfield man told the officers he had fallen asleep behind the wheel. Antonello suspected Molina was under the influence of narcotics because his pupils were constricted and he kept nodding off while trying to talk, police report.
Antonello asked Molina if he had used heroin. Molina said he had snorted a bag of heroin while he was driving. Molina also had drug paraphernalia in his minivan. He was taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters, police report.
Ogdensburg Police Sgt. Joseph Sanfilipo, a certified drug recognition expert evaluated Molina at the Sparta headquarters. Molina was charged with possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of a narcotic, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, possession of controlled dangerous substances in a motor vehicle.
Molina was released to a responsible adult pending a court date.
